The front cover of a Carolingian illuminated Gospel book, the Codex Aureus of Saint Emmeram, Regensburg, 870. The cover shows Christ in Majesty, the four evangelists and scenes from the life of Christ. The fine gold relief work is framed by jewels and pearls in elaborate raised gold settings.
