I have always loved things that glitter and glimmer and glow. This is something that links mosaic and electronic crafts. Mosaic reflects ambient light, creating a glittering surface of colour, while electronic works generate their own glowing light sources. A less obvious link in my work is my interest in Medieval Art. This developed from working in mosaic and studying and writing about its history and has grown into a wider fascination with the stylised and powerful art of the Middle Ages. As I studied the surviving artefacts of the medieval world I was impressed me by the unashamed enthusiasm for all things decorative and colourful, and in particular for bright and shiny metals and stones. I feel jealous of Medieval artists who were working at a time when such qualities were seen as precious and beautiful rather than gaudy and vulgar. Although I am inspired by these works I am also aware of the perils of pastiche and the joyless heritage of Victorian artists' attempt at a Gothic Revival. I have tried instead to apply a Medieval sensibility to contemporary technology and to create works that reinterpret the strictly functional vocabulary of electronic circuitry. We live in a golden age of electronic invention and the tiny Leds and delicate circuits lend themselves to the kind of shiny, bright and beautiful objects that Medieval artists created from very different materials but inspired by a similar sense of visual delight. |
